Cemetery Compliance Guide

Cemetery Regulations

Custom gravestone dimensions in New Jersey must meet the regulations of the receiving cemetery — rules that vary from institution to institution and cover height, base, material, and in some cases imagery. NJ Gravestone Shop confirms the current rules at your cemetery before the design process begins, ensuring that a custom design we develop together will be installable without modification.

Foundation Requirements

Custom gravestones in New Jersey require concrete foundations prepared by our installation crew to the receiving cemetery's specification. Foundation depth and method are confirmed as part of our regulatory review before production begins. Our crew sets and levels the finished stone with mechanical equipment.

Religious Cemetery Considerations

Faith-based cemeteries across New Jersey may carry denomination-specific rules about carved imagery, portrait work, or symbolic elements. NJ Gravestone Shop is familiar with these considerations across Catholic, Jewish, Protestant, and Orthodox institutions and confirms all relevant details with your cemetery before any design is finalized.

Our Collection

Our Headstones Collection

Custom Headstone

At NJ Gravestone Shop, a custom gravestone in New Jersey begins with a blank slate and ends as a stone unlike any other in the cemetery. Our artisans have carved everything from portraits rendered with photographic fidelity to scenes from the natural world — eagles, deer, wildflowers, the Delaware Water Gap — to architectural elements from a family's parish church or a veteran's military installation. The stone itself is American-made granite selected for its suitability to the specific design: a fine-grained black granite for portrait work that demands high tonal contrast; a medium gray granite for a nature scene where color variation adds visual interest; a warm mahogany for a family that wants the stone's own character to complement the carved imagery. Upright, slant, and flat formats are all available. Every custom gravestone is produced to the cemetery-compliant specifications of the receiving institution, ensuring the uniqueness of the design does not come at the cost of a smooth installation.

Granite Options

American-made granite in several colors forms the material foundation of every custom gravestone NJ Gravestone Shop produces. India Black granite, with its fine grain and consistent dark surface, is the workshop's most flexible canvas — it handles portrait etching, fine lettering, and complex relief carving with equal quality. Mountain Gray presents a classic, neutral surface that reads well in any cemetery setting. Dakota Mahogany, with its warm reddish-brown tone and moderate crystalline variation, adds organic character to nature-themed and traditional designs alike. Our Morris County showroom holds sample slabs of each variety for comparison in natural light.

Custom Design Process

The custom design process at NJ Gravestone Shop begins with a conversation about the person the gravestone will honor. Consultations are conducted in English, Russian, or Polish — in person at our Morris County showroom or by telephone. Reference materials families bring — photographs, religious imagery, hand-drawn sketches, printed inspirations — are incorporated into a scaled design drawing produced by our design team. You review and approve that drawing before any stone is touched. Our artisans then execute the approved design by hand, reporting progress back to your family as work proceeds.

Our Process

Our Hand-Carving Process

Six stages guide every custom gravestone through NJ Gravestone Shop's Morris County workshop. Consultation: we meet with your family to understand the person and the design. Design drawing: we produce a scaled layout of every element for your approval. Material preparation: the selected American-made granite is inspected and secured for carving. Hand-carving: our artisans execute the full design using appropriate tools for each element — pneumatic for broad shaping, hand chisels for fine detail. Finishing: letter fills, surface polish, and inspection against the approved drawing. Installation: the completed stone is transported to the cemetery, a foundation is prepared by our crew, the stone is set and leveled, and the installed monument is photographed for your records.
